How this EV ownership cost planner works
This planner gives you a transparent estimate of what it costs to own and use an electric car per year and per month. It uses a simple model that you can easily adapt to your own situation:
- Vehicle cost per year is based on annualised depreciation: (purchase price − expected resale value) ÷ ownership years, plus one-time costs spread evenly over the same period.
- Energy cost per year is calculated from your annual distance, EV consumption and the share of energy charged at home vs public chargers.
- Fixed yearly costs (insurance and maintenance) are added on top to give you a total yearly and monthly number.
- Cost per 100 km / 100 miles is an all-in figure that includes vehicle, energy, insurance and maintenance – useful when comparing with a gasoline car on a per-distance basis.
The goal is not to predict exact numbers, but to help you see how different factors – purchase price, resale value, tariffs, driving distance and charging habits – influence the true cost of owning an EV over several years.
